“UNITING FOR CHANGE: CHAIRPERSON MRS. HELEN EBIMALU EKPESON LEADS ETSAKO EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT SENSITIZATION PROGRAM ON VIOLENCE AGAINST THE GIRL CHILD”
Etsako East, November 22, 2025 – In a bold and commendable step towards addressing the rising concerns of violence against the girl child, the Office of the Chairperson of Etsako East Local Government Council, Mrs. Helen Ebimalu Ekpeson, organized a sensitization program on Friday, November 21, 2025. This pivotal event, held at the Etsako East Local Government Council Secretariat, aimed to enlighten and educate parents, students, and the larger community on the pressing issue of violence against girls in our society.
The Chairperson, Mrs. Helen Ebimalu Ekpeson, was ably represented by the Secretary to the Local Government Council, Hon. Edward Imanobe, who delivered an impactful opening speech. Speaking passionately, Hon. Imanobe emphasized the urgent need to address the societal ills that disproportionately affect young girls, noting that such issues have become alarmingly common in today’s society. He urged parents and students to be vigilant and proactive in combating these harmful practices.
The program featured two distinguished guest speakers who provided deep insights into critical topics. The first speaker, Dr. Mrs. Helen Unawangono, shed light on the various forms of violence against the girl child, including physical, emotional, sexual, and psychological abuse. She discussed the societal and cultural norms that perpetuate these acts, highlighting specific challenges in Nigeria such as child marriage, female genital mutilation (FGM), sexual violence, trafficking, and denial of education.
Dr. Unawangono also referenced recent incidents, including the tragic abduction of 25 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the recent case in Ekwotsor community, where five children—among them girls under the age of 18—were abducted. These examples underscored the devastating impact of insecurity and targeted violence on the education and well-being of young girls.
The second speaker, Dr. Alhajia Raqiat Musa, shifted focus to an equally important topic: Personal Hygiene—Its Meaning, Effects, and How to Maintain Hygiene. She emphasized the vital role of personal hygiene in promoting overall health and well-being, particularly for young girls. She explained the meaning of personal hygiene as the practice of keeping one’s body, clothing, and surroundings clean to prevent illness and maintain self-confidence.
Dr. Raqiat Musa highlighted the effects of poor hygiene, such as infections, low self-esteem, and absenteeism from school. She provided practical tips on maintaining hygiene, including regular bathing, washing hands properly, wearing clean clothes, and maintaining menstrual hygiene. Her session was both educational and empowering, equipping attendees with actionable knowledge to improve their daily lives.
The event concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, allowing attendees to seek clarity and share perspectives on the discussed issues. Light entertainment followed, adding a touch of warmth and connection to the impactful day. The program ended with a closing prayer, leaving participants inspired and motivated to take action.
In attendance were several key dignitaries, including Hon. Edward Imanobe, the Secretary to Etsako East Local Government Council; Head of Social Development department, Mr. Ameh Sule; security personnel; representatives from various schools within the local government council; and other invited guests who lent their support to this critical initiative.
This sensitization program, spearheaded by the Office of the Chairperson, reflects a strong commitment to addressing violence against the girl child while promoting critical topics like personal hygiene. It serves as a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility we all share in creating a safer, healthier, and more equitable future for girls in our society.
