A bold step for community wellness was taken yesterday.
Etsako East, Edo State – On Wednesday, 24 June, 2026, the Acting Executive Chairman of Etsako East Local Government Council and Chairman of ALGON, Edo State Chapter, Rt. Hon. Sunny Ekpetika Ekpeson, convened an urgent engagement with the Executive Council of the Nigerian Association of Patent and Proprietary Medicine Dealers, NAPPMED, Etsako East Chapter.
The meeting held at the Council Secretariat focused on protecting our youths and safeguarding the health of every community in Etsako East.
Rt. Hon. Ekpeson was represented by his Special Assistant on Security, Mr. Bright Omoudu, who opened the session with a clear message: this administration is committed to zero tolerance for drug abuse.
The purpose of the meeting was simple yet powerful — to unite stakeholders in the fight against illicit substances that threaten the dreams of our young people.
Across Etsako East, reports from parents, leaders, and concerned citizens have been rising. The Council Boss hears these concerns daily.
In response, he has launched a proactive campaign to eliminate the circulation and abuse of dangerous drugs in our area.
This is not just enforcement. It is education, prevention, and partnership.
Rt. Hon. Ekpeson believes change starts with awareness. That is why NAPPMED, as custodians of health-related products in our communities, are key allies in this mission.
The Council Chairman called on all members to become champions of public sensitization — to speak with customers, mentor youths, and spread the message that drug abuse destroys futures. A healthy community begins with informed choices.
The law is also clear. Abuse and trafficking of illicit substances is a criminal offense under Nigerian law.
Security agencies including the Nigeria Police and NDLEA have been fully briefed and are on alert.
Rt. Hon. Ekpeson issued a firm but fair warning: Etsako East will no longer be a safe haven for dealers or users. Anyone caught violating the law will face full legal consequences.
Our youths deserve better, and this administration will ensure they get it.
The rising cases of substance abuse are worrying because they rob our young people of focus, dignity, and opportunity.
To protect them, we must act together. Government, health dealers, families, and community leaders all have a role to play.
For public awareness, these are the dangerous substances targeted in this campaign:
1. Stimulants
Cocaine – powder, crack cocaine; Methamphetamine – crystal meth, ice, tik; Amphetamine – speed
2. Depressants
Heroin – smack, brown sugar; Opium
3. Inhalants / Other Abused Substances
Codeine; Tramadol; Glue, petrol, aerosol used as inhalants
4. New Psychoactive Substances, NPS
Synthetic cathinones – bath salts, flakka; Synthetic opioids – nitazenes; Colorado / Kolos – local street names
